Where it comes from

The milk-sign of 102 — ga, milk in the jar. Akkadian keeps the shape and presses the consonant: qa, the emphaticpronounced with extra tension further back in the throat than its plain twin — q versus k, ḥ versus h back-of-the-mouth q that Sumerian never needed a letter for. Where a g and a q could blur, the scribes let the milk-sign carry the harder sound.

How to remember it

Milk pressed hard turns to something sharper — so does the g: press it to the back of the throat and the milk-sign says qa. The stele uses it to call its own words nasqā, “choice, picked out” — quality pressed from quantity.
