Where it comes from
Dust, soil, rubble — so the sign lists, with the usual measured confidence. Its Akkadian career runs on the sound: iš is a vowel-consonant syllable, exactly the shape Akkadian’s closed syllables demand, and it opens verb after verb in the past tense (iš-tu, iš-ru-uk — “from,” “he granted”) along with nouns like išdum, “foundation.”
How to remember it
Dust is what a foundation trench is dug through and what everything settles into. The sign starts at the bottom: where there is an iš, something is being grounded — a building’s footing or a verb’s past.
