Where it comes from

A compound in the old lists (IGI.DIB in the modern sign catalogs) whose pieces long ago fused into one workaday shape. Its career is its sound: u₃ writes the Akkadian conjunction u, “and.” Sumerian mostly joined things by setting them side by side; Akkadian, like its Semitic cousins, says the “and” out loud — so a sign Sumerian could take or leave became one of the fourteen most frequent in Old Babylonian writing.

How to remember it

And — the sign you’ll meet exactly where English would put the word: between heaven and earth, the strong and the weak, silver and barley. When the line pauses to add one more thing, this is the wedge-cluster doing it.
