Where it comes from

Early forms are read as a tablet shown with its ruled lines — the writing surface drawn as its own sign, though the late shape has grown opaque. It writes dub, “(clay) tablet,” and builds the script’s proudest title: dub-sar, “tablet-writer” — the scribe.

How to remember it

A tablet with its ruling still visible: a slab crossed by the lines a scribe pressed to keep the writing straight. The script’s own self-portrait — the thing you are reading, drawn inside itself.
