Where it comes from
A man swinging a stick with both hands — caught at the top of the blow. Silent: it classifies force, effort, and violence — strike, beat, drive off, teach (the Egyptians noticed the connection) — any verb that costs sweat.
How to remember it
Effort is a man putting his back into it: when a verb wears this figure, someone is straining. From flax-beating to demon-smiting, the swing is the same.
