Where it comes from

Two short diagonal strokes — no picture, pure notation, the lightweight way to write y (usually at the end of a word), where the fuller spelling would draw the reed twice. Two marks for a doubled sound.

How to remember it

A pair of ticks: y is j twice, and the scribes kept the arithmetic — two little strokes instead of two whole reeds. Count the marks, hear the doubling.

• tm — to be no more, ended — the pair-strokes riding in its spelling, the sad sparrow and the bookroll classifying the doom
• rn≡k — your name, its death-sign written with the cautious substitute stroke
