Where it comes from
A standing figure — the statue, a person’s image made to outlast them (classic). Sumerian called it alan; Akkadian keeps the writing and speaks its own word, ṣalmum — image, likeness, the stone self that receives what is said before it.
How to remember it
The statue is the person who stays. Hammurapi’s laws end with an invitation to stand before HIS — ana maḫar ṣalmīya — and read. The sign is the king waiting in stone.
