Where it comes from
One of the rare signs whose Akkadian sound and an Akkadian word coincide: ellum means “bright, pure” — cultically clean — and the lists connect the sign with that sense. On syllable duty it is simply el, and its steadiest job in this school’s texts is closing the construct bēl: be-el, “lord of.”
How to remember it
Bright — polished, cleared of tarnish. The sign finishes “lord” the way a shine finishes silver: be + el, and the title gleams.
