Where it comes from
The day-sign — one of 101’s first signs, polyvalent from its first appearance: ud, “day,” and utu, the sun-god. Akkadian inherited the whole bundle and added tam to it, a value the sign had carried in syllabic use since early times. In the course’s texts it closes accusatives of -t- nouns: nērtam, “a murder (charge).”
How to remember it
The old day has a dark hour: in law 1 it sets at the end of nērtam — the murder charge. The brightest sign in 101’s sky, doing the grimmest word in the first law.
