Where it comes from
A compound in the catalogs — a lion-sign with “day” pressed into it (PIRIG×UD) — read as a raging beast, a lion in fury; the lists state the picture without certifying it. Akkadian uses the sound: ug or uk, voiced or not as the word demands, most memorably in law 1’s uk-ti-in, “he convicted.”
How to remember it
A lion is what a courtroom becomes at the moment of conviction: uktīn — “he proved it against him” — opens with the lion-sign, and someone is about to be eaten.
