Where it comes from
Court records say di for a case: lawsuit, judgment — di kud, “to cut a verdict,” is how Sumerian decides. The proverbs use its going-sense instead, for anyone (or any dog) that wanders. Justice and strolling, one syllable apart.
How to remember it
A verdict is a line drawn through a dispute — one straight judgment. And till the judgment comes, the case goes on: the same sign ambles through the proverbs as plain going.
