Where it comes from
Not “a land” among others but the Land — the way a Sumerian text names its own country, as against the foreign kur on the horizon. Kings are lugal kalam-ma, “king of the Land”; goddesses are its mother.
How to remember it
The Land is home ground: where the mountain-sign looks outward at the highlands, this sign plants itself in the river plain and means ours. One word of geography that is really a word of belonging.
