Where it comes from
Honestly uncertain: a sieve? a placenta? The identification is debated, and the course teaches the use, not a story. The use is solid: it writes ḫ, the hard rasp of Scottish “loch.”
How to remember it
A sieve rasps when you shake it — grain against mesh, the sound of ḫ. Whether or not the Egyptians drew a sieve, the hatched disc scratches, and that scratch is the letter.

Piece by piece:
- fsw — the cook, literally “the one who cooks”
- Wnḫ,w — his name, the sieve-sign rasping its middle
A kitchen man, named for eternity on his master’s wall — with the debated disc doing honest phonetic work. The sign is taught in 101’s chapter 04.
