Where it comes from

A woman seated on the ground, wrapped in her long dress — the counterpart of the seated man. Silent: it classifies women’s names and titles, from serving girls to goddesses.

How to remember it

The woman sits at the close of a name and settles the question the sounds leave open: a woman is meant. Wherever a mother, daughter, or goddess is written, she sits there in person.
