Where it comes from

A mouth, seen from the front — lips parted, the classic identification. It writes r, and as a word of its own it IS rʾ: mouth, utterance, spell. The preposition r, “to, toward,” rides on the same sound: where the mouth points, the sentence goes.

How to remember it

The mouth is an open oval — the shape your own lips make saying r. Everything spoken in this script starts here: the spell is a “mouth,” and the mouth writes itself.
