Where it comes from

A single grain — a small circle, often written in threes. Silent: it classifies sand, minerals, powders, pellets, drugs — anything that comes in grains. The pharmacists’ favorite sign.

How to remember it

One dot of sand stands for everything you measure by the pinch: ochre, incense, salt, medicine. When a recipe’s word ends in the little grain, you could pour the substance through your fingers.
