Where it comes from

A single ripple of water — the zigzag line every child draws for a wave. It writes n: the genitive “of,” the dative “to, for,” and the n inside half the words in the language. Stack three ripples and you get N35A, water itself.

How to remember it

One ripple joins two banks — and n joins two words: “the spell OF water,” “give it TO him.” Wherever Egyptian needs a little bridge, a line of water runs under it.
