Where it comes from

A ring-stand for a jar — the household rack a round-bottomed vessel sits in. It writes the sound g, hired out to any word that needs it, from gm “find” to the gꜣ of “lack.”

How to remember it

A stand with no jar on it is the picture of wanting — and Egyptian agrees: gꜣ, “lack,” is spelled with this very sign. The rack holds the sound g the way it holds a jar: snugly, whatever gets set on it.
