The belonging thread

之 is the single most frequent character in the classical corpus, and its biggest job is one small thing: it ties an owner to the owned — X 之 Y, “X’s Y.” The owner always comes first; the thread hangs between; the thing owned closes. This chapter drills the thread and brings in the words the classics most love to hang on it:

王者，民之首也。wáng zhě, mín zhī shǒu yě"the king is the people's head" — the thread inside the verbless frame this course opened with: two grammars, one sentence

人相見。rén xiāng jiàn"people see each other" — 相 slips in front of a verb and turns it mutual

The chain, whole

Chapter 04 read the Laozi’s counting chain with its first word withheld. The word was the Way:

道生一，一生二，二生三，三生萬物。dào shēng yī, yī shēng èr, èr shēng sān, sān shēng wàn wù"the Way begets one; one begets two; two begets three; three begets the ten thousand things" — from undivided source to everything there is, in thirteen characters, every one of them yours

有無相生。yǒu wú xiāng shēng"having and lacking give birth to each other" — the having-and-lacking pair, made mutual by 相

When the great Way walked

The Records of Ritual opens its most quoted chapter with the thread carrying its biggest load:

大道之行也，天下為▢。dà dào zhī xíng yě, tiān xià wéi gōng"when the great Way walked the world, all under heaven belonged to everyone" — the classical golden age: no dynasties, no private hoards; the box is "common to all", a few chapters ahead. 大道之行, "the great Way's walking," is the thread turning a whole clause into a noun — the trick the next chapter teaches in full

The king named Pattern

文 ends the chapter as a name. The Odes open their great hymn to the Zhou founder — called King Wen, “the Cultured King” — with four characters you can read outright:

文王在上。wén wáng zài shàng"King Wen is above" — the founding king, dead and radiant in heaven, watching his house. 在, be-at, doing exactly its job
