Already, and at last

也 closes a judgment: it is so. This chapter’s 矣 closes a CHANGE: it has come to be so — by now, already, at last. Its partner 已 means “already” outright, and doubled into 而已, “and no more than that.” Around the pair, the chapter gathers the words time is told in:

The first line of the first book

The word for learning arrives, and with it the sentence that opens the Analects — the most quoted first line in Chinese:

學而時▢之，不亦▢乎？xué ér shí xí zhī, bù yì yuè hū"to learn, and in season practice what you learned — is that not a pleasure?" — learning becomes joy at the moment practice lands: 時 as "at the right time" turns study into a rhythm. The boxes are "practice" and "pleasure"

The dusk completes

Chapter 03’s evening scene owed a box to this chapter. 矣 pays it — watch what the little word does:

日之夕矣，▢牛下來。rì zhī xī yǐ, yáng niú xià lái"the sun has set BY NOW; the sheep and oxen come down" — 矣 is the ache in the line: not "the sun sets" but "it has already come to dusk," and still he is not home. One box left: "sheep"

Then and now

今 against 古 — the tradition’s favorite hinge of complaint:

古之學者為▢，今之學者為人。gǔ zhī xué zhě wéi jǐ, jīn zhī xué zhě wéi rén"the learners of old learned to better themselves; today's learners learn to impress others" — study as self-improvement against study as performance. The box is "oneself"; every other character is yours, 者 and 之 doing exactly what their chapters taught

Years, seasons, and no more

三年無▢於父之道。sān nián wú gǎi yú fù zhī dào"for three years, change nothing in your father's way" — the classical measure of mourning and respect: hold the household steady before you remake it. The box is "change"

▢民以時。shǐ mín yǐ shí"put the people to work in the right season" — 時 in statecraft: call them for labor after the harvest, never during it. The box is "employ" — four chapters ahead, where causing is the lesson

道一而已。dào yī ér yǐ"the Way is one — and that is all" — 而已, "and no more than that," closes arguments across the classics; here it closes a made-for-practice line
